In terms of cost, it ranges from $5,000 to $15,000 for a standard cosmetology school. In terms of the amount of time it takes, this depends on the specific course you undertake and what it covers. However, most courses take somewhere between 9 and 15 months to complete, so you are not committing to a long period of study.
Training Hours
As well as learning the theory, you will need to get training hours before you are fully certified as a cosmetologist. The requirements for training hours are different in each state, but most places will require you to complete between 1,000 and 2,300 hours, including the time you spend in the classroom. This is a big commitment and it’s actually more hours than it takes to become a police officer, but if you can find a junior position at a beauty business, you will be earning while you complete these hours.

State Exams
After finishing cosmetology school and completing all of your training hours, you have one final step to complete. Each state will have a specific exam that you need to take before you get your license. This will cover all of the basic techniques and safety procedures that you should know to make sure that you are competent. Once you have passed this exam, you will be qualified and you can start applying for positions.
